¡Mighty Mujeres!

Ten Mighty Mujeres turned up to lend a hand at Saturday's ¡Spring Garden Blitz! at the Head Start Family Garden. Head Start moms and their little ones, ladies of the Food Forest and a crew of girls and a mom from Fort Bragg 4H spent the afternoon making a new bed, building shelves in the toolshed, weeding, planting, turning compost, mulching and more!

Spring Garden Blitz! Done and Done!

Spring Garden Blitz! has been deemed a success in Ukiah. Thanks to the CCC, Together We Can! Mendocino, the parents at all the school gardens, Schat's for donating 7 dozen pastries to keep our volunteer fueled, Cold Creek Compost, Oak Valley nursery, Home Depot, and the City of Ten Thousand Buddahs. Also a huge thanks to our partners in Willits and Ft. Bragg for making this a county wide event! All played an integral part in getting our gardens ready for the most successful season yet!

All of our volunteers did an awesome job last Saturday. Volunteers helped get boxes re-built and filled with compost at N. Pine street senior apartments, the gardeners at Orchard got their plots de-bermuda grassed and ready for the summer season, Talamage pre-school planted strawberries and fruit trees, and S. Ukiah head start built a lovely fence out of bamboo.

Spring Garden Blitz! was truly a community endeavor. Over 88 volunteers served 299 volunteer hours at 10 gardens across the county. Everyone played an essential role and contributed to the successes at each garden. The Gardens Project and the gardeners can not thank all the volunteers and businesses enough! Check out the slide show below to see pictures from this weekend. Monthly Garden Tips

What to do in Your Garden this month
by Suzanne Millard, Ukiah Master Gardener

By now you've noticed that the Buckeye trees are nearly full of leaves and those daffodils that signal spring's approach are starting to fade. We all keep our fingers crossed through the weeks ahead as fruit trees flower so that frost doesn't hit and take away the promise of a bountiful fruit harvest. This is a fantastic time of the year as we get ready for early spring-cleaning in the garden.

Below are some of the primary tasks that will help to prepare your garden for a long and prosperous growing season.

Spring-cleaning & garden preparation tasks:

  • Turn-in winter cover crops (after rains have subsided and soil is no longer wet)
  • Clean up raised beds amend the soil with healthy compost
  • Tune up Irrigation systems, replace tired parts and set up the system to accommodate the new season's garden plan. Remember to plant your vegetables and flowers together according to companion planting guides and watering needs
  • Build new plant supports for climbing plants and to maximize your garden space (vining plants such as peas, cucumbers, beans are all great climbers)
  • Perform soil and water tests for pH levels
  • Fertilize trees for maximum fruit production
  • Start your spring weeding routine

Gardener's Tips - What's going on in the garden this Month? (Please click here (add hyperlink) for Peter Huff and Kate Frey's Monthly Planting Calendar for Inland Mendocino, also found at the "How to - Grow Food" page on The Garden's Project Website)

During the month of April you can directly sow vegetables and fruits such as beets, carrots, chard, kale, lettuce, potatoes, celery and turnips outside. Inside, you'll want to start lettuce, chard, cucumbers, melons, zucchini, summer squash and pumpkins. At this time you can also transplant lettuce, leeks, onions, brassicas, chard and kale.

For flowers and herbs, you can directly sow dill, cilantro, and cold sensitive flowers such as Nasturtiums, Morning Glory and Alyssum. Parsley and basil may be started from seed indoors to be transplanted later.

Welcome to spring! Migrate to the great outdoors and feed your body and your soul through healthy sustainable gardening!

Installing the Water Tank

The new 5000 gallon rainwater catchment tank has been moved to its new home at the Talmage State Preschool Garden! The River School students led by Joe Scriven from the Mendocino County Water Agency have been designing the new rainwater catchment system to capture rainwater from the preschool's roof.
The final connection between the roof and the tank should happen in the next weeks to capture Spring rain. Much thanks to the North Coast Resource Conservation and Development Council, the Community Foundation of Mendocino County, and MCOE Youth Garden for supplying funds to purchase the tank and its components. Click on the picture to see more photos of the installation! Let it rain!
