Breaking Ground NOW: Two New Community Gardens for Ukiah

Maybe you've seen it in the paper, or you've seen the tractor out turning under grasses and opening up the canvass for fresh ideas. Wondering what's going on? TWO new community gardens for Ukiah residents!

During the next month, The Gardens Project will be working with our partners and future gardeners to create community gardens at Village Circle & Gobbi near the train trackers, and in Vinewood Park just north of Low Gap.

Vinewood Gardener Interest Meeting

Vinewood Park Community Garden is a collaboration between the City of Ukiah and The Gardens Project. The Garden will be located along the North end of the park, along the fence line in an area underused and covered in ivy. The garden will provide 12 wheel-chair accessible raised beds as well as 16 additional beds for neighboring families and individuals. Pinoleville YouthBuild, our most valuable partner in garden construction, will be building the fence and raised beds for the garden.

Preparing Village Circle for Gardening

Village Circle Community Garden will be developed in partnership with private land owners Kathy Brigham & Jim Lohr, and Sharon & Michael Shapiro. This garden will be one of the largest community gardens in Ukiah with 45 plots, second only to the State Street Garden which currently has 54 garden plots. Gardeners from the Cleveland Lane Community Garden will transition to this new garden after their garden closes due to expansion of the Grace Hudson Museum at the end of this year. Directly south of the garden are the Summer Creek apartments, who's residents will also be joining in with the garden. Thank you to Jason Dolan and Dark Horse Farming Company for providing labor and materials for the fencing!

Though we encourage those surrounding community gardens to join, anyone in Ukiah (or sometimes even surrounding towns like Redwood Valley, Calpella and Talmage) are welcome to join! If you want to grow food and need a place to do it, with a community of people to learn from and enjoy- give us a call! 462-1958.
