Four New Gardens!

2 residents at Thunderbird Apts. stand by their garden plots
The Gardens Project and community gardeners have been very BUSY this spring creating four new residential and community gardens!

Three of the gardens are on land donated by Dan Obergin for use by his tenants in the National 9, Woodlands and Thunderbird Apartments. The garden behind the National 9 Apartments is our biggest garden yet and also offers plots for surrounding apartments, neighbors and Social Services employees.

The fourth garden is behind the old pear sheds and serves the residents there. These gardens were all zoned, designed, tilled, trenched, irrigated, and topped with raised beds and drip irrigation

These gardens represent the community minded spirit of so many within the Ukiah community and those from outside that have supported their development.  The staff at the City of Ukiah were instrumental in working with the community to permit the use of the State Street Community Garden.  The S.H. Cowell Foundation in San Francisco provided the majority of funding through a generous grant for the Thunderbird and Woodlands Apartment Gardens, as well as the State Street Gardens.

Additionally, numerous local individuals, organizations and businesses donated their time and supplies to support the development of the gardens.  John Bailey plowed three of the gardens.  Arrow Fencing, Richard Del Bucco, Dark Horse Farming Co., and Chevalier Vineyard Management provided fencing and gates at the State Street Community Garden.  The California Conservation Corps put in numerous days of work putting in irrigation piping and building raised redwood beds.  Produce seeds and hundreds of plant starts were donated by The Ukiah Natural Foods Coop, Transition Ukiah, Mendocino College Agriculture Dept., Lovin Blooms, C & A Organic Farm, and the Anderson Valley High School Agriculture Dept.   And truck loads of compost and wood chips were donated by Cold Creek Compost and Johnson’s Quality Tree Care.
Las Peras and the State Street Community Gardens are almost at capacity this growing season for their 81 plots.  However, community members interested in a plot or to get on the waiting list can contact The Gardens Project at 467-3212.
