The Summer Youth Garden Crew continues to support community and school gardens throughout the area. In the last week they have done major clean-ups with weeding, mulching, path work, harvesting, and irrigation installation at Willits High School, Orchard Apartments Garden, the Jack Simpson Apartment Garden, the Talmage State Preschool and the River School Garden at MCOE.

Summer Youth Work Crew!
The Hopland Elementary School Garden got a big summer cleaning and weeding thanks to the tremendous work of the MCOE Summer Youth Garden Crew!!
The MCOE Youth Garden Project, in partnership with MPIC, has been able to allow "At-Risk" youth to lend a helping hand in our community. The funds for this fantastic Service Learning Project came through a federal stimulus grant package. Students work daily on different community and school gardens helping to clear away weeds, build garden boxes, double - dig new beds, install and repair drip irrigation, harvest crops, and make homemade projects. The students will be putting on an event "What's Growing On" on August 7th @ MCOE to showcase their skills and gardens. For more information, contact the crew leader, Jonna at jonna@mcoe.us

Another harvest-South Ukiah!
The newly planted South Ukiah Head Start Garden is pumping out the monster zucchini, which we harvested and donated to Plowshares this week. Tomatoes are ripe, cucumbers not far behind, and we're looking forward to heirloom melons. This garden is a cute little space, packed full of veggies for the neighborhood. We'll be starting weekly classes for kids in the garden next week, Thursdays from 8:30 to 10:00 am. Bring your kids for early morning fun and snacks in the garden, and bring home freshly harvested veggies!
Harvest time for Talmage!
It's such a pleasure driving throughout the county seeing such lush and productive community gardens! The Talmage Garden is ready to harvest fresh strawberries, blackberries,kale, chard, spinach, cucumbers, zucchini, basil, chives, green beans, Asian greens, mint, lemon balm, and tomatoes. Peppers,corn and melons are coming on strong, and with this heat should be ripe and delicious in a couple of weeks. There's a bevy of activity around MCOE, with hard-working students painting, gardening, and landscaping. Watch for our Salsa at the the Salsa taste-off in August!

Garden Plots Available at Willits High School
Are you interested in gardening?
The new farm at Willits High School has garden plots available to community members interested in growing their own fruits, vegetables and flowers. These sunny plots have been tilled, amended, and have irrigation water available. The plots are free of charge in this first year of the program, and instruction and guidance is available for novice gardeners.
Volunteering at the farm is a great way to learn more about gardening and offers valuable support for the farm program which will supply healthy,
fresh food to school children. Low-income volunteers will be awarded “Green Bucks” which can be used for purchases at the Willits Farmer’s Market. For more information contact Farm Manager, Antonia Partridge, at

Head Start Families Dig In!
With the help of several Head Start families and Noyo Food Forest volunteers the garden at Fort Bragg Head Start is taking root! We have received generous donations of lumber and other materials to build a small tool shed and frame the beds to line them with hardware cloth...there are so many gophers! Peas, cherry tomatoes, sunflowers, lettuce and green beans are in the ground and more will be planted each week as we finish the beds.
Family Garden Days are every Thursday from 2-4pm this summer. Head Start families and community volunteers of all ages are welcome!
This summer we will be planting and tending food that will be served to the Head Start students in the fall. Produce will also be for volunteers who lend a hand. Join us this Thursday as we create more beds and plant more food!
